And another thing…

When I worked at Fox I used to give my colleague a hard time about drinking diet Coke. Aspertame is evil. I have always had a list of things that I don't use or avoid as much as possible and that list and tendency is only heightened by my cancer year.

Recently the lymphedema in my left arm acted up. I'm sure I aggravated it with the move, with gardening, lifting children, boxes… whatever. And then I realized that I had also been back on antiperspirant over the summer so I didn't stink up the joint. Deodorant I have no problem with, but let's face it, in July it may be necessary to use antiperspirant. So I did. And I was a habitual user. And my arm swelled.

It could be a coincidence. It could very well be a combination of many aggravating factors. I'm sure that it is, but I am as sure that the antiperspirant was a factor. I went back to just deodorant. It doesn't clog up your sweat glands… in your arm pits… near your lymph nodes and breast tissue. Hey, I got tired of that serial email that went around warning of the dangers of antiperspirant just like you, but I am telling you, I am noticing a definite improvement in my arm when I use deodorant without antiperspirant.

Just consider it. Consider using a more simple deodorant product when it's not so crazy hot and sticky. I may be anti-aspartame, anti-antiperspirant, and anti- Styrofoam and microwave, but I am really just worried about us all. I buy some organic food, I use 98% natural shampoo from Burt's Bees and my own bags at the grocery store. I ask for a ceramic mug at Panerra for my coffee. It's just time to take care of ourselves, our kids and our world in all the ways that we can.
